Style Guide

2025

I know that choosing outfits for your photo session can be so overwhelming, but I'm here to help you! The clothing you choose makes such a huge impact on the overall look of your images, and I definitely want you to feel comfortable and love what you choose!

While outfits are important, remember that these photos are more about showcasing your connection and this special moment in time!

Let's get styling

1.  Choose your location first! This will make it much easier to narrow down style choices! Some of my favorite spots are the beach, Freemason District in Norfolk, or Pleasure House Point.

2. Choose Mom's outfit first! Let's be honest- if you don't feel your best, you probably won't love your images as much as you would if you felt gorgeous! Once you have your outfit chosen, it'll be easier to build from there and add in coordinating pieces!

3. Say yes to the dress! I LOVE photographing dresses! They tend to be flattering, forgiving when chasing kiddos, and the movement of a maxi dress adds a beautiful element to your images. Remember to consider areas you're self conscious about when choosing your dress- ie. some might feel more comfortable in options with sleeves or a higher neckline. We'll be moving and playing during our session, so you don't want to be tugging or adjusting!

4. Consider softer tones. Neutrals and softer colors are timeless and photograph beautifully. Brighter colors can reflect color back into your skin and create less than flattering color casts!

5. Choose two main colors, and one or two accent colors that coordinate. Be mindful that prints complement each other instead of competing. Often, one or two prints that vary in scale are perfect, with the rest of the outfits in solid colors.

6. For Dads, well fitting pants in neutral tones (greys, browns, kahki) with brown shoes, and a logo free slim fit shirt is timeless and flattering. Henleys or button ups photograph well, but I recommend avoiding small plaids (sometimes the camera lens can distort the lines). A sweater or coat can elevate the look in cooler weather.

1.  Pleasure House Point- I love this spot in Virginia Beach for flowy grasses, marshy water views, and beautiful greenery.

2. East Beach, Norfolk is my favorite beach spot, and has grassy dunes as well as water!

3. Freemason District in Norfolk is a great location with beautiful architecture and historic elements.

4. Botanical Gardens- if you're a member, you get 1 free photo session a year! I highly recommend choosing the gardens for March or April sessions when the cherry blossoms are blooming!

5. Sweethaven Lavender Farm- The lavender blooms in June and July, and I'm love to photograph there! It's about an hour hike with a photography fee, but absolutely worth it for such special images!

6. My Studio in Chesapeake is one of my favorite places to photograph! It's intimate, neutral, and has beautiful light! It's a perfect spot for a lifestyle maternity, newborn or milestone session without having to clean your house!

I have a growing collection of beautiful items that clients are welcome to use. Dresses for Mom ranging from XS-XXL, mostly neutral, flowy maxi dresses that flatter a variety of shapes, including bellies! I also have a variety of options for little ones too! Many of the images on my website and Instagram feed feature options from my Client Closet! I add items regularly, so can send you photos of the latest closet!

Ladies, I highly recommend investing in hair and makeup! It really elevates your look, makes you feel like a million bucks, and professional makeup photographs beautifully.  I have some great artists if you need recommendations!

Fun accessories like a hat, headbands, vest or a stack of bracelets is a great way to add texture and visual interest. Even a bouquet of flowers can add interest to your images and give you some extra variety! I always bring a crate, stool, or blanket for little ones to sit or stand on!

Depending on the location, my mint beach cruiser is available for sweet couples photos!

Odds and Ends: Ladies, a neutral manicure (or at least no chipped hot pink polish!) is recommended, don't forget bloomers/diaper covers for little girls wearing dresses, and make sure to remove fake tattoos!

For Ladies: Morning Lavender, Pink Blush, Baltic Born, Free People
For Babes: H+M, Jamie Kay, Zara
For Guys: H+M, Zara, J Crew

I can't wait for your session, and I'm here to help! I love it when clients send me outfit options, so don't hesitate to reach out!
