There’s a chill in the air, and we’re approaching one of the most beautiful times of year in Hampton Roads! It’s no wonder that it’s the photographer equivalent of the Super Bowl! Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully against the warm colors of fall. Think creams, tans, muted greens, or soft blues. From there, you can layer in cozy textures like knits, cardigans, or scarves to add interest without overwhelming your photos.

Gone are the days of everyone in jeans and a white shirt! Instead, aim for outfits that coordinate by pulling from the same color palette. Hats, textured shawls, or even a simple bow for your little one can add personality to your photos. Keep accessories minimal, but don’t be afraid to bring in pieces that reflect your family’s unique style.

A few years ago, when my kids were little, I remember . I loved capturing them in that season—but after the session, those images sat on my hard drive for months. One or two made it to Facebook, maybe one became my profile picture, but the rest? Lost in the chaos of everyday life. Think flattering dresses, both neutrals and pretty prints, and sweet children’s pieces that photograph beautifully in Virginia’s golden fall light. My goal is for you to show up relaxed, knowing you’ll look and feel amazing. While you may still have to fill in gaps with a few pieces, and using the client closet isn’t required, my hope is that it streamlines the process of coordinating outfits and minimizes the expense of having to purchase clothing that may only be worn once!

A Fun Session with out the “Say Cheese!”

Kids are wiggly, energetic, and have their own goals for the session (most often, to explore!) so while I have some tricks up my sleeve to get the “everyone looking and smiling” photo, take a breath, because we will move and play! Tickles, Ring Around the Rosie, airplane, and other movement based games will help kiddos stay engaged and connected! Also, while images with everyone’s faces visible are preferred in traditional portraiture, be open to photos that show connection and emotion in other ways, like hands clasped, or the sweet fleeting details that you’ll miss when they’re gone! This also takes the pressure off parents and kids to always be looking and smiling, and instead be present and connected! Those are sweet moments you’ll want to remember.

Some sessions are extra sentimental, and these photos of Baby Aria as a brand new one-year-old have my heart!

Her family lived just across the street, and it was the sweetest season of simply doing life together. I was there from the moment her mama first said, “I think I want another baby,” through the excitement of her gender reveal, slow walks around the block, and porch chats as we waited for Aria’s arrival.

I still remember the joy and anticipation of watching their car pull into the driveway when they brought her home from the hospital. And just before the military moved their sweet family across the country, Aria curled up in my arms and slept for hours—tiny, peaceful, and perfect.

Now, a year later, they came back for a much-too-short visit—and I knew we had to squeeze in a quick session for this beautiful girl. As a Chesapeake baby photographer, it was such a joy to document how much she’s grown.

She’s still got those same stunning blue eyes and gentle spirit, but now she’s full of personality, curiosity, and those precious toddler curls. And while she wasn’t exactly in the mood for a photo shoot at first, her mama pulled out all the stops—crazy dancing, silly voices, the whole show—and it worked! We captured the most heart-melting gummy smiles and sweet little giggles.

Documenting these milestones, especially for a dear friend, is something I’ll never take for granted. These fleeting moments matter—and preserving them is one of the greatest privileges of being a Chesapeake baby photographer.

I met Tom + Angela through some mutual friends, and I was thrilled when Angela won my Instagram giveaway last fall! We had the most fun planning this East Beach couples photography session, and it was so fun to use my new beach cruiser! I love when the vision in my head comes to life! The dreamy light, the cheerful pattern on her dress, the beach grasses, and their sweet connection give me all the heart eyes! 

Chasing Joy despite Loss

Their love and inner joy radiates in these images. What you can’t tell is that this couple had just received some really hard news. Instead of postponing, Angela wanted to go ahead with our session as a way to cope and bring joy.  Honestly, that is the driving force behind what I do.  I started this business in the middle of the darkest time of my life, because I needed to find the light. It’s the foundation for the type of images I strive to create- joyful, light, bright, connected.

It’s not just about pretty photos. It’s a glimpse of blessings even in heartache and disappointment. It’s a reminder that there can be beauty and joy in the midst of pain.

When we moved back to Hampton Roads last summer, I was so excited to discover all the fun places that popped up while we were away! Sweethaven Lavender Farm was at the top of my list, and when I saw they were hosting a lavender festival, I bought tickets for both weekends!

Unfortunately, the pandemic had other ideas. I’m so glad we were still able to make an appointment to pick our own lavender bouquets + enjoy the farm!

It’s about an hour away for us, but so worth the drive. The rows of lavender + beautiful farmhouse shop made my France loving heart so happy. I’m so excited to return next month when another variety of lavender + a field of wildflowers are blooming!

I highly recommend cooling off after picking your bouquet with the lavender lemonade. It’s as refreshing as it is beautiful! I also took home some of the lavender hand frosting + it’s heavenly!

Both my girls loved our time at Sweethaven Lavender Farm. It’s always interested to see how their age + personality differences manifest in new situations. While Adelyn very carefully snipped each sprig of lavender for her bouquet, Everly explored + ran until she was a sweaty mess. Adelyn slowly savored her lemonade, and Everly didn’t move until she had slurped every drop.

Our paper wrapped bouquets are displayed in each of our bedrooms, and we plan to dry them so we can enjoy a beautiful lasting souvenir!
