Baby Milestone Photography in Virginia Beach

Everything You Need to Know About Baby Milestone Sessions in Virginia Beach, Virginia

One of my favorite parts about photographing little ones is getting to document your baby as he/she grows!

That’s why I’m obsessed with our First Year Membership! You already know, your baby changes SO fast, which is why pre-scheduling these sessions makes sure you’ll have these moments and details of your baby’s fastest year don’t slip by, with lots of fun bonuses!

How Baby Milestone Sessions Work at Jessica Jeremiah Photography

Baby milestone sessions are photoshoots that capture the key stages of your baby’s first year, from bump to birthday!

These stages include:

  • Maternity: You’ll never regret documenting your belly! It’s such a special, fleeting time even if you don’t feel your best.
  • Newborn: The first sleepy, squishy, curled up days go by the fastest!
  • 3 Months: Baby isn’t mobile, but I love documeting their first smiles, the cheeks filling out, and snuggles with Mom and Dad!
  • 6 months: The sitting session, when your baby can sit up on their own but generally aren’t super mobile, and the TOE GRABS are the best!
  • 12 months: The first birthday session, celebrating your baby turning one. This can be in studio or outside, with our without a cake smash!

With the JJP First Year Membership, you can choose to document any combination of these milestones!

When to Book Baby Milestone Sessions?

Many parents book these sessions during their newborn ordering appointment. Planning ahead ensures you have a spot on the calendar and reduces stress during those busy months.

Plus, having everything lined up allows you to focus more on enjoying the moments rather than worrying about logistics.

What to Expect from Each Session

Maternity Session

Maternity sessions can include just Mom, Mom and Dad, or the whole family! In studio, outside or in home are all amazing options. In studio, you can select multiple outfits, and even add on a milk bath!

Newborn Session

Again, newborn sessions can include just the baby, or baby and parents and siblings! The studio is a really sweet, relaxed space for newborn sessions without having to worry about the light or cleaning up your own space, but of course I’m happy to come to you. Outside newborn sessions can also be really special during warmer months!

3-Month Session

At three months, we may be able to document some sweet smiles, and the focus will be on preserving the little details that change so fast!

6-Month Sitting Session

At six months, your baby is likely sitting up on their own and may even be starting to crawl or roll over.

This session focuses on capturing their adorable personality and curiosity as they explore their world. Babies at this age are full of smiles and giggles, making it a delightful time to take photos. The toe grabs are my absolute favorite!

Props and Outfits: Think cute chairs, their favorite toy, and adorable outfits. (don’t worry, I provide props, chairs and outfits!)

Personal Props: Bring along their favorite toy or book. These personal items can add a unique touch to the photos and make your baby feel more comfortable.

Location Options: You can choose from my studio, your home, or an outdoor setting. My studio or another local studio offers a controlled environment with lots of props, while home sessions can capture your baby in their familiar space. Outdoor sessions can provide beautiful natural light and scenic backgrounds.

12-Month First Birthday Session

The big one-year milestone is here! Your baby is likely standing, taking their first steps, and babbling. This session celebrates your baby’s first birthday and all the joy it brings. It’s a wonderful opportunity to capture their growing independence and playful nature. These sessions can be all about baby, or it’s a great time for family photos too!

Themes and Props: Cake smashes, balloons, and special birthday outfits are popular choices. Cake smashes are especially fun and make for some adorable and messy photos, or I have a classic wooden cake if you want to avoid the mess! Balloons and themed decorations can add to the festive atmosphere.

Personal Props: Consider bringing a special birthday gift or a keepsake. Items like a favorite book, a cherished stuffed animal, or a handmade blanket can add a personal touch to the session.

Location Options: A studio provides a controlled environment where you can manage lighting and props more easily. Outdoor sessions offer natural light and open spaces for your baby to explore. Both settings can result in beautiful photos that capture the excitement of this milestone.

On on recent cake smash, older sister joined the fun and showed her baby brother how it was done!

It’s my job to make this easy for you!!

Don’t worry about bringing tons of props or outfits. I provide these to make things easier for you, and we will brainstorm about what will make your session feel unique and special! I love incorporating fun little touches, like florals, fun sunglasses, pinwheels, etc.

Tips for Parents

Preparing for a milestone session doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are some tips to make it smooth and enjoyable:

  • Naps and Feeding: Of course, make sure your baby is well-rested and fed before the session to keep them happy and comfortable. If that means we need to schedule your session at 8am – let’s do it!!
  • Favorite Toys or Blankets: Bringing familiar items can help your baby feel more at ease.
  • Puffs/Snacks Welcome!: Oftentimes your baby’s favorite snack or bottle can get them happily to the end of their session

Don’t worry – if you’re a client you don’t have to remember all these details! I’ll send you a prep guide before each session!

What You Need To Know About Cherry Blossom Photo Sessions In Virginia Beach

There’s something undeniably magical about cherry blossom season in Virginia Beach. For a few weeks at the end of a dreary, cold season, these delicate blooms let us know that spring is here! It’s no surprise that cherry blossom photo sessions have become one of the most requested experiences for families, couples, and creatives alike. Here’s all you need to know about cherry blossom photo sessions in Virginia Beach!

A joyful couple smiling among the cherry blossom trees in Virginia Beach

But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: capturing these blooms well takes a little more intention than just showing up when the trees look pretty.

An adorable couple having fun during their photo session in the cherry blossoms with Jessica Jeremiah Photography

Timing Is Everything (But It’s Never Exact)

Cherry blossom season typically falls between late March and early April in the Virginia Beach area. That said, nature doesn’t run on a fixed calendar.

There are actually several varieties of cherry blossom trees, and each one blooms at slightly different times. Some trees may peak early, while others follow a week or two later. Weather plays a huge role too since warmer winters can bring earlier blooms, while cooler seasons may delay things.

What this means for you: flexibility matters.

If you’re planning a session, it’s important to stay open to slight shifts in timing. The most beautiful images often come from being able to adjust when the blooms are at their best, not just when it’s most convenient on paper.

A couple is clearly in love as they sit under the cherry blossoms, smiling at each other during their photo session in Virginia Beach with Jessica Jeremiah Photography

Why You Should Book Early

Cherry blossom sessions are limited and highly sought after every year. Photographers typically offer a small number of spots because the bloom window is so short.

If you’re thinking about booking, don’t wait until the trees start blooming—by then, most calendars are already full.

Booking early does two things:

  • It secures your spot during peak season
  • It gives your photographer room to guide you if the blooms shift earlier or later than expected

This season is a little bit of a moving target, and having a plan in place ahead of time makes all the difference.

A young couple in love twirls and plays together during their photo session in Virginia Beach with Jessica Jeremiah Photography

Popular Locations (and What to Know About Them)

Two of the most well-known spots for cherry blossoms in the area are:

  • Red Wing Park
  • Norfolk Botanical Garden

Both locations offer beautiful, dense clusters of blossoms and are incredible for simply enjoying the scenery.

However, because they’re so popular, they also tend to be very busy during peak bloom. Crowds, limited space, and constant foot traffic can make it more challenging to create a calm, intimate photo experience.

For that reason, many photographers choose more low-key or lesser-known spots for sessions…places where you can still get that dreamy blossom look without the distractions.

What to Wear for Cherry Blossom Photos

Styling plays a huge role in how your images feel.

Cherry blossoms naturally create a soft, romantic, light-filled environment, so your outfit should complement that, without too much contrast or heaviness.

Think:

  • Soft, light tones (creams, blush, pastels, muted neutrals)
  • Flowy fabrics that create movement
  • Simple, timeless pieces over bold or busy patterns

The goal is an overall light and airy look that blends beautifully with the blossoms and enhances the softness of the scene.

If you’re unsure, lean toward outfits that feel effortless and comfortable. You want to look like yourself, just slightly elevated for the setting.

The JJP Client Closet is full of options that are perfect for cherry blossom photos! While the 2026 season is almost over, get on my wait list for next year so you can have first dibs when sessions open!

5 Ways to Make Toddler Photoshoots Fun in Chesapeake, VA

Simple Ways to Engage Toddlers During Photo Sessions

I’ve been a family photographer for more than a decade, and have photographed countless toddlers and small children. Along the way, I’ve picked up some easy ways to make toddler photo shoots more fun! Yes, they can be unpredictable, they move as fast as lightning, have *big* emotions, but they’re honestly my favorite to work with! You never know what they’re going to do, so it’s impossible for the photos to feel overly posed or stiff! Here are a few of my tried and true techniques to help toddler photo sessions go a little more smoothly!

Detail images of a family photo session in a Norfolk, VA garden

Feed them first!

Sessions are often scheduled in the evening for light, so make sure they have a hearty snack or even an early dinner so they aren’t hangry! I’ve totally had to photoshop an orange snack cup out of multiple images because a sweet little one was so ravenous that even after a lengthy snack break, she still needed to hold her puff cup!

Along the same lines, try to make sure they get a good nap, and don’t schedule any shots the week before your session!

Play Their Favorite Tunes:

Music works like magic. Play your toddler’s favorite songs and watch them light up. Dance, sing, and be silly together. It’s a great way to capture natural smiles and laughter. We do this in the studio all the time! Don’t ask me how many times I’ve listened to “Baby Shark!”

Little boy shares his first birthday cake smash with his sister

Incorporate Their Favorite Toy: Bring along their favorite toy or stuffed animal- bonus points if it’s neutral or classic. It can be a comfort item and also a great prop for candid shots, and helps you remember more about *this* stage! I have several wooden toys like boats, trains, blocks and rattles, as well as knit dolls in soft tones. These can add a sweet detail and keep your kiddo engaged without being super distracting!

Use Funny Faces and Sounds: Never underestimate the power of a funny face or a silly sound. Peek-a-boo, funny animal noises, or even a playful ‘I’m going to get you’ can lead to adorable expressions.

One word of caution- too many people making crazy noises and faces can be overwhelming, so stick with one person standing behind the photographer!

Two brothers sitting on a bench giggling in Norfolk, VA

Something Unexpected: A long handled feather duster and a squeaky pirate chicken dog toy are my secret weapons to getting real smiles from toddlers! They never expect to be tickled with a feather duster, and the sweet little face they make when expecting the tickle is adorable!

You can also hand them a piece of clear tape to get them to sit, at least for a moment!

Candid photos of a family of 5 playing in a park in Chesapeake, VA

Take Breaks: Toddlers have short attention spans. Don’t push for continuous shooting. Take breaks, let them play, and then come back for more snaps.

Use prompts: I have a handful of silly prompts or questions to ask toddlers that can get real smiles and fun candid shots! Try some of these:

– Do you know who lives in my camera? Spiderman! Look really close – can you see him? He jumps out when I take a photo! *Snaps photo* Did you see him??? (This only works with a “real” camera not usually a phone, but worth a try either way!)

– Let’s play a game of “who can laugh the loudest?” Ready 1-2-3 laugh!! (Pro tip – the REAL laugh will come a few seconds after the loud laugh)

A family of 4 plays under oak trees in Norfolk, VA

– Does a cat say “woof woof??” A cat goes “woof woof” right?? No?? Are you sure? I’m pretty sure a cat says “woof woof!” How about a cow? What does a cow say? “Meowwwww?”

– Ask them to tell mommy or their sibling their favorite (animal, toy, tv show, etc). They might not laugh but it’ll get cute “whispering” shots and you might get a giggle or two!

We run on the kiddos time at a session. They are naturally curious and full of energy, which means they may not always cooperate with our vision.

How YOU can help your toddler take more genuine photos and have more fun!

Lower expectations: Whether your photo session is an impromptu one with your phone or you’re hiring a photographer, the best way to be pleasantly surprised is to lower your expectations.

Instead of aiming for perfect poses, embrace the candid and unscripted moments!

These unfiltered shots often turn out to be the most authentic and heartwarming – and you get to see more of your child’s personality!

Don’t Stress: Toddlers are incredibly perceptive, and they can pick up on your anxiety.

If you’re relaxed and happy, they’re more likely to be the same!

When you’re having fun together, those genuine smiles and expressions will naturally emerge, resulting in photos that truly reflect the joy of the moment.

Whether you’re headed to a professional photoshoot or you’re taking photos at home with your cell phone, the key to capturing those priceless, spontaneous moments with your little ones isn’t about the perfect pose or smile.

Cake Smash, Family, Milestone

A Chesapeake Photography Studio Designed to Feel Like Home

There’s something beautiful about being photographed in a space that feels calm, simple, and inviting.

That’s exactly why I created my lifestyle photography studio in Chesapeake, Virginia!

A pregnant mom sharing a sweet moment with her toddler daughter

It’s neutral by design with soft whites, warm textures, organic tones, so your images will feel timeless and blend beautifully into your own home. No bold colors competing for attention. No trendy backdrops that date quickly. Just light, connection, and the ones you love most.

I truly believe that your photos shouldn’t just live on your phone, they should fit into your life and home effortlessly where they can bring joy and remind you of your greatest blessings.

Dreamy Light, All Year Long

One of the most special things about the studio is the light. I love it when a client enters for the first time- their soft “oh wow!” when they walk through the door. It’s a space that feels calm and inviting, like you can exhale.

A newborn baby girl wrapped in a pink swaddle in a basket surrounded by flowers

It’s soft, consistent and dreamy in every season.

Whether it’s the middle of winter or the heat of summer, the light pours in and wraps around you in a way that feels gentle and natural. You don’t have to chase golden hour or worry about weather. The glow is always here.

And that means your images will always feel warm, no matter the month.

The “In-Home” Feel… Without the Overwhelm

her birthday cake

So many families love the idea of lifestyle, in-home photos.

But in reality, that means decluttering, cleaning, moving furniture and stressing about whether the light in your house is “good enough.”

In the studio, you get the cozy, snuggly, relaxed look of in-home photography without any of the pressure.

No rushing to tidy up.
No wondering if your baseboards will show.
No last-minute scrambling.

You simply show up and know that a beautiful space (and wardrobe!) is waiting for you.

A Space That Invites Connection

The studio is intentionally cozy with several seating options and textures. Open floor space allows little ones to move naturally. Simple setups encourage snuggling, playing, and being present.

It’s not about stiff posing.

It’s about:

  • Babies curled into your chest
  • Toddlers climbing into your lap
  • Quiet maternity moments
  • Gentle laughter and movement

The space holds that beautifully.

Everything You Need Is Already Here

A rack of beautiful dresses available for Jessica Jeremiah Photography clients

You don’t have to bring a trunk full of options or wonder what will photograph well.

I have:

  • A thoughtfully curated client wardrobe with high quality dresses from Jamie Kay, Femme and Fawn, Free People, and Nothing Fits But
  • Simple props like baskets, stools, benches, and seasonal florals
  • Clean, timeless pieces that enhance and never distract

And for mamas wanting something extra special, there is a beautiful tub available for milk bath sessions or intimate maternity portraits. The simplicity of it creates images that feel soft, feminine, and deeply personal.

All you have to do is walk in the door.

Come As You Are

The heart behind this studio is simple:

A mom wearing a white dress cuddles a new baby.

I want you to feel taken care of.

I want the experience to feel easy.
Restful.
Even a little like a deep breath.

You don’t need a perfectly styled home.
You don’t need to stress over details.

The First Year Membership: Documenting Your Baby’s First Year

The Beauty of a First Year Photography Membership in Hampton Roads

I know it feels like you’ll remember every detail, but trust me- the newborn scrunch, gummy smiles and knee dimples, the first wobbly steps… it all happens so quickly! It’s on to the next stage, and those moments that seemed so significant gradually fade into hazy memories.

That’s why I created my First Year Membership for families in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Norfolk, Virginia. Instead of scrambling to book a session at each stage, you get to relax knowing that your baby’s first year will be beautifully documented from beginning to end.

Why Choose a First Year Membership?

1. A Relationship That Grows With You

From your maternity session to your baby’s first birthday, you’re not just working with a photographer, you’re working with someone who gets to know your family, your story, and your style. That means by the time we’re capturing your little one’s first steps, you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera, and know what to expect each time! And if there are older siblings? Working with the same photographer makes the process SO much easier and more fun since they don’t have to warm up to a stranger!

2. Every Milestone, Without the Stress

The first year is full of milestones you’ll never want to forget: tiny newborn fingers, tummy time grins, sitting up, crawling, and finally standing tall at one year. With the membership, you don’t have to remember to schedule each session- it’s already planned out for you.

3. Consistent Style, Beautiful Storytelling

When you work with the same photographer across the year, your images naturally tell a cohesive story. Each session flows into the next, creating a collection that feels intentional and timeless. Imagine an album that begins with your maternity glow and ends with cake-covered baby smiles- it’s a legacy you’ll treasure.

4. Guidance Every Step of the Way

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in Virginia Beach, VA

There’s a chill in the air, and we’re approaching one of the most beautiful times of year in Hampton Roads! It’s no wonder that it’s the photographer equivalent of the Super Bowl! Everyone is scrambling to book photos for Christmas cards, but one of the biggest stressors for moms is figuring out what everyone should wear for fall photos in Virginia Beach!

That’s why I’ve created a curated client closet and a personalized style guide for all of my families. My goal is to take the guesswork out of wardrobe planning so you can actually look forward to your session (instead of running through Target the night before!).

Here are my top tips for putting together outfits for your fall family photos in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and the greater Hampton Roads area.

1. Start with Neutrals, Then Add Layers

Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully against the warm colors of fall. Think creams, tans, muted greens, or soft blues. From there, you can layer in cozy textures like knits, cardigans, or scarves to add interest without overwhelming your photos.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in jeans and a white shirt! Instead, aim for outfits that coordinate by pulling from the same color palette. For example, if mom wears a flowing cream dress, dad might pair khaki pants with a muted green button-up, while kids can wear soft pastels or subtle patterns that tie everything together.

3. Think About Movement

Some of my favorite images happen when your kids are running, twirling, or snuggling in your arms. Choose outfits that allow for movement like flowy dresses, soft sweaters, and comfortable shoes help create those natural, joy-filled moments you’ll treasure.

a family of four taking photos by the water with the kids running around

4. Add Subtle Accessories

Hats, textured shawls, or even a simple bow for your little one can add personality to your photos. Keep accessories minimal, but don’t be afraid to bring in pieces that reflect your family’s unique style.

5. Take Advantage of My Client Closet

Here’s the best part—you don’t have to do this alone! As a full-service photographer in Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads, I offer access to my hand-picked client closet filled with dresses and children’s clothing that photograph beautifully. Fall Family Photos Without the Stress: Full-Service Photography for Busy Moms in Hampton Roads

A few years ago, when my kids were little, I remember . I loved capturing them in that season—but after the session, those images sat on my hard drive for months. One or two made it to Facebook, maybe one became my profile picture, but the rest? Lost in the chaos of everyday life. I was too overwhelmed to choose outfits, too exhausted to figure out printing, and too busy to design an album.

That experience is exactly why I became a full-service family photographer for Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and Norfolk families. Because photos aren’t just about the session itself, they’re about helping busy, overwhelmed moms actually enjoy the process and end up with memories they can hold in their hands.

Here’s what the journey looks like when you book your fall family photos with a full-service photographer who is with you every step of the way:

Couple walking through a rose garden

A Personal Consultation—Because Your Story Matters

Before your session, we’ll hop on the phone or meet in person to talk through wardrobe, location your vision, and your family’s unique dynamics. Do you want cozy, snuggly images under colorful fall trees in Chesapeake? Or playful beach photos in Virginia Beach? This step ensures your session feels personal, not cookie-cutter.

Stress-Free Styling with a Curated Client Closet

Instead of racing through Target the night before your session, or ordering clothes online that may or not fit and then having to return them, you’ll have access to my carefully curated client closet. Think flattering dresses, both neutrals and pretty prints, and sweet children’s pieces that photograph beautifully in Virginia’s golden fall light. My goal is for you to show up relaxed, knowing you’ll look and feel amazing. While you may still have to fill in gaps with a few pieces, and using the client closet isn’t required, my hope is that it streamlines the process of coordinating outfits and minimizes the expense of having to purchase clothing that may only be worn once!

A Fun Session with out the “Say Cheese!”

Kids are wiggly, energetic, and have their own goals for the session (most often, to explore!) so while I have some tricks up my sleeve to get the “everyone looking and smiling” photo, take a breath, because we will move and play! Tickles, Ring Around the Rosie, airplane, and other movement based games will help kiddos stay engaged and connected! Also, while images with everyone’s faces visible are preferred in traditional portraiture, be open to photos that show connection and emotion in other ways, like hands clasped, or the sweet fleeting details that you’ll miss when they’re gone! This also takes the pressure off parents and kids to always be looking and smiling, and instead be present and connected! Those are sweet moments you’ll want to remember.

Turning Photos into Tangible Artwork

When your gallery is ready, I’ll sit down with you—virtually or in person in Hampton Roads—to walk through your images. Together, we’ll decide which ones you love most and how to display them in your home. Whether it’s a statement piece above your mantle, an heirloom album to pass down, or a gallery wall that grows with each season, I’ll guide you through it

photo album of a baby girl

Because your family deserves more than digital files on a hard drive. You deserve artwork that brings joy every single day.

Ready for Your Fall Family Photos?

If you’re looking for a full-service photographer in Hampton Roads, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, or Norfolk who takes the overwhelm out of family photos, I’d love to walk with you through the process. Together, we’ll create images that don’t just live on your phone, they’ll live in your home.

Preparing Your Firstborn To Be An Older Sibling

Introducing a new sibling is such a special and tender season for your family — but let’s be honest, it can feel a little like navigating uncharted waters, too!

older siblings with baby sister in Jessica Jeremiah Photography white studio

Your sweet firstborn has had your full attention their entire life — whether that’s been a short 18 months or seven whole years, like my oldest daughter. No matter how long they’ve been your “one and only,” welcoming a new baby is a big adjustment for everyone. There’s a period of learning, growing, and shifting as everyone settles into their new roles.

The good news? A little bit of preparation can go a long way when it comes to helping your older child adjust to this big change. (And you’re already on the right path just by reading this blog!)

How to Start Preparing for Introducing a New Sibling

Let’s talk specifics: What can you do now to prepare your older child for the arrival of their new baby brother or sister? Here are my tried-and-true tips — both as a photographer and as a mom who’s walked this road myself.

1. Read Books About Becoming a Big Sibling

One of the sweetest ways to begin preparing your child for introducing a new sibling is through books. Stories help children process change in a safe and familiar way.
A few favorites to start with:
I’m a Big Sister or I’m a Big Brother by Joanna Cole
The New SmallCircles – Unusual Relationships for Unique People by Tess Castleman

These books gently walk through the ups and downs of welcoming a new sibling and help little ones imagine what this new season might look like.

2. Let Them Be Involved in Preparing for Baby

As you decorate the nursery or shop for those tiny newborn essentials, invite your older child to help! Let them choose a special stuffed animal or pick out a piece of décor for the baby’s room. Giving them small, meaningful opportunities to participate helps them feel included and important — not left out of all the excitement.

3. Use Inclusive Language: “Your Baby”

I once heard Dr. John Delony share this tip, and I’ve never forgotten it. Instead of always referring to the new addition as “the baby,” try saying “your baby.”
For example: “Your baby is going to be so lucky to have you as a big sister!”
That small shift in language can make a big difference in helping your child feel connected, protective, and proud of their new role.

4. Be Thoughtful About Their First Meeting

That very first meeting between big sibling and baby is such a tender, once-in-a-lifetime moment. If possible, have Dad or another family member hold the baby when your older child enters the room, so your arms are free to scoop up your big kid for a snuggle first. This can help reassure them that their bond with you is still strong and steady, even as everything around them feels new.

5. Don’t “Blame” the Baby

It’s natural for older siblings to notice the shift in your attention once the baby arrives. That’s why it’s so important to be mindful of how you explain changes.

Try to avoid saying things like:
“I can’t get your snack because I have to feed the baby.”

Instead, try language like this:
“Of course! I’d love to help you. I just need a few minutes, and then I’ll be right there.”

This gentle shift helps prevent your older child from seeing the baby as the reason their needs aren’t being met, which can minimize resentment and help preserve harmony in those early days.

6. Involve Them After Baby Arrives

Once baby is home, inviting your older child to help in small ways can build connection and confidence. Maybe they can pick out the baby’s outfit, sing a lullaby, or talk to the baby during tummy time. These tiny moments help strengthen their sibling bond and remind them they’re a valued, important part of this new family dynamic.

7. Prioritize One-on-One Time

Even with all the excitement of introducing a new sibling, it’s natural for feelings of jealousy or insecurity to pop up. One of the best ways to reassure your firstborn of their place in your heart is to carve out a little one-on-one time.

It doesn’t need to be elaborate — think movie nights, a quick ice cream date, or a special walk together. What matters most is giving them your undivided attention and reminding them that while everything around them is changing, your love hasn’t.

8. Keep Their Routine as Consistent as Possible

Children thrive on predictability. As much as possible, try to maintain familiar routines: bedtime stories, silly dinnertime traditions, the way you brush their hair in the morning. These little rhythms provide a sense of security and normalcy in the midst of big transitions.

Final Thoughts on Introducing a New Sibling

Every child will react differently to becoming a big sibling — some with excitement, others with hesitation, and most with a little bit of both. The most important thing you can offer is your steady presence, your patience, and your reassurance that there’s room in your heart for them and this new little life.

I hope these tips help make introducing a new sibling a little smoother for your family. If you’re looking for a photographer to beautifully capture those first tender moments between your big kid and their new baby sibling, I would love to help you preserve those memories.

East Beach Family Session | Norfolk Family Photographer

There’s something so special about watching a family grow and change over time — and getting to document each sweet chapter along the way, including this East Beach family session, is truly one of my favorite parts of this job.

I’ve had the absolute joy of photographing this beautiful family since their now two-year-old was still growing in mama’s belly. From their maternity session to newborn snuggles, and now capturing this season as they prepare to welcome another precious little one — it’s been such an honor to preserve these milestones for them.

Light-filled family photo session at East Beach in Norfolk, VA. A joyful family of four playing under large oak trees, with parents smiling and interacting with their young children during an outdoor lifestyle photography session.

We met at East Beach, but since we’ve already done one beach session, chose to the gorgeous oak trees and beautiful blooms as their backdrop. The lawn provided lots of space for their busy little one to run, and we all had a bit of a workout keeping up with him!

The best part of photos with little ones is that they feel natural and joyful, and never overly posed. I photograph quickly and always have little games and fun prompts to keep them engaged! I bring my 14 year old daughter to nearly every session with toddlers so she can help me wrangle and evoke natural smiles- usually with a squeaky pirate chicken or a tickle from a long handled feather duster!

I’m so excited for this family to welcome another brother in the fall, for their big move to North Carolina!

While I’m a little sad to see them leave, I’m so incredibly happy for them as they enter this new season, surrounded by loved ones and with a new baby on the way. Documenting these fleeting moments is exactly why I love what I do — capturing the joy, the connection, and the sweet in-between that makes family life so beautiful.

Garden Maternity Session | Hampton Roads Maternity Photographer

There’s something so magical about photographing dear friends as they await the arrival of their baby. This stunning garden maternity session was extra special—not just because of the sweet little boy on the way, but because it was captured during a winter getaway to Miami!

While our home in Chesapeake, VA was buried under a foot of snow, we were soaking in the sunshine, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant blooms. The unique architecture and dreamy gardens provided the most beautiful backdrop, and it was so fun to feel inspired again!

As much as I loved photographing this Miami session, there’s no place like home. If you’re expecting and dreaming of a light-filled, timeless maternity session, let’s plan something just as magical right here in Hampton Roads!
